Almost everyone who is active in the online world is going to be familiar with the concept of a blog

. There are many of them and they are used for an enormous number of different things. This article is about the idea of creating a blog as a clearinghouse for current telecommunications information.

The concept of a blog (short for web log) is very simple. It is a place where one or more people can easily post short chunks of information. Some people use them as on line diaries where they post notes about what is going on in their lives. Others post comments about current events. One blog that I frequently look at is used for news about the local area. It covers a much smaller area than a typical newspaper would.

Blogs, also known as online journals are frequently used to post specialized news stories. There is no reason for an online journal to be limited to news in the conventional sense. It could certainly contain advertisements, reviews, and other items related to the central topic. For it to be useful, the main requirement is for the postings to be related to some common subject.

Collecting current telecommunications information into a blog is consistent with common practices. Clearly this journal could have more than conventional news stories in it. Advertisements can be a significant source of information, as can reviews. The concept is that if someone wants to see what is new in telecommunications, they could read this journal.


This should be fairly easy to implement and support using standard blogging software. They can usually be configured to allow one or several people to post articles. The fact that the most recent postings are at the top is generally what we would want in this application, as readers are usually more interested in the most recent postings.


Blogs often allow readers to post comments on the articles. When there is a lot of traffic on the site, the comments can add a lot of value to the journal. Of course, they can also lead to controversy, heated arguments, and flame wars. However, since telecommunications is primarily a technical subject, this should be less of a problem than it is with controversial areas. If necessary, the administrator should have the ability to remove objectionable comments.

A challenge of using the online journal format would be if there was a need to organize postings in some way other than reverse chronological order. Perhaps it would be desirable to have them grouped into different subjects. This is not an insurmountable problem. If there are only a few subjects, perhaps there could be a separate journal for each of them. It might also be possible to have a subject cross reference, though I don't think this is a standard blog feature. A search tool would certainly be useful if the volume of posts became large.

I do think that a blog could be a very useful tool for organizing and presenting current telecommunications information. It has some flaws, but it also has some good features. For one, it wouldn't cost very much to set up. Another is that most of the possible users are going to be already accustomed to working with blogs, so there wouldn't be much of a learning curve.
