Organizing Your Home Can Lead You Down A Charitable Road

Organizing your home can be a daunting process

. Depending on how big your home is and how much stuff you own, you might find yourself ready to pull out your hair.

Before you do anything by way of actual organization buying organizing products, alphabetizing your DVDs, etc. you need to sort through everything you own and figure out what you don't use. One of the biggest obstacles for a well-organized home is too much stuff.

First, sort through your clothes, shoes and accessories. Any season-based garments (swimsuits, tank tops, shorts for the summer; heavy sweaters, coats for the winter) that you haven't worn in the past year need to go. Don't fall into the "But I might want to wear it" trap. It'll be too far out of season by the time you "want to wear it" anyway. Any year-round appropriate clothes you haven't worn in the past six months also get the boot. Apply the one-year rule to your shoes (exceptions include ice skates and snow shoes) and the six-month rule to any jewelry or hair accessories. While you're sorting you can start separating the clothes you're keeping it'll make them easier to organize when you're ready to start.

Next, sort through your housewares. It was nice of Grandma to give you all that tableware, but you're probably never going to need 30 dinner plates, each with their own matching salad plates and soup bowls. Get rid of the 5 extra shampoo and conditioner bottles. Leave no closet unturned. Really? Seven umbrellas? Boot 'em. As with the clothes, start separating things in the way you'll want to organize them.

Then, go through your DVDs, CDs, games, etc. If you haven't watched, listened to or played something in the past year, it's gone. Consider a disc binder, unless you really want each disc in its original case.

Now that you know what you're keeping and what you're not, figure out what you want to do with the latter. Donating it is the most noble route, though if you have something particularly valuable you might try selling it and investing the money in organizing products. Try to throw out as little as possible (it's wasteful!), except when it comes to any papers or documents you absolutely don't need; they can be tossed, or shredded if need be.

Take a look around. Doesn't your home look tons better already? But you're not off the hook just yet. Now you need to get the organizing products and start the actual organizing. Get however many jewelry organizers and shoe racks you might need and a closet organizer. Stackable storage cubes and shelves are recommended, because they can be easily added onto if you find yourself with more stuff. Underbed chests are another great way to store things and save space; they come in all sizes, so even if there's not a lot of space between the floor and the bottom of the bed you'll still be able to store things there. Now that you know how not-completely-stressful organizing your home can be, what are you waiting for? Get a move on!
