Original Arta Small, But Rich Investment For Artist, Buyer And Society
Most novice art collectors do not really understand the investment they make when
purchasing original art and they need some help in understanding the disposition behind the possible outcome. Those who have never taken part in investing in such a purchase also do not realize the act benefits more than just the artist, but society and also the buyer.
As of late, a good example of these benefits took place in June 2010 when an original art piece titled Birth by artist F.N. Souza sold for $2.5 milliona record price in the original art world for an Indian painter. The purchase took place at Christies auction house at an auction for South Asian art. The piece had previously been part of a private collection.
A notorious figure all his life for his original art and provoking writing, Francis Newton Souza (1924-2002), known for being the only Indian artist with an art collection displayed at the Tate Gallery in London, was born off the west coast of India in Goa. His paintings were labeled as eclectic in their subject matter and media used to create them. Souza liked to experiment, so no influences were ever discernable in his work. He created one of his most popular paintings, Red Curse, on black silk, which is very unusual for any artist. He had an innovative style of strong, bold lines that he used when creating facial features. Some of Souzas most popular paintings were created when he lived in London and New York in the 1960s. Needless to say, Souza was a very inventive artist.
As an Indian Independence activist, Souzas paintings became more political as he matured, and that Souza claims was the reason he was asked to leave Sir JJ Art School in Goa. As a founder of the Progressive Artists Group in Mumbai and an Indian Independence activist, people who buy modern and contemporary art learn something of the world.
Purchasing original art obviously never guarantees fortune as with the F.N. Souza painting, but most art collectors have other reasons behind their passion, such as appreciation for the culture and society from which original art is born. Collectors are able to take a glance into the world of an artist and know almost everything about the tie the piece was created, the emotions the artist felt, and the reason behind the painting. The works also represent an era of modern art, when artists felt free to abandon the rules of an earlier time and experiment with the freedom of new and materials and outlook.
Purchasing original art comes with the possibility of owing a piece of history as well as taking enjoyment in the beauty of a striking painting, and getting satisfaction through someone elses story. So that is why it is important to take the time to do the appropriate research in order to get that special piece you are looking for.
