Orlando Fl | 6 Types Of Orthodontic Braces Explained

Over the years many new and exciting technological advances have been made in the world of orthodontic braces and smile re-building.

Metallic Braces

The good old-fashioned metallic braces are available in three basic types - stainless steel, stainless steel alloyed with nickel and/or titanium and gold plated stainless steel braces.

Metallic braces include conventional braces which require ties to hold the arch wires in place and the newer self-ligating (self tying) braces. The self-ligating braces reduce friction between the slots of the brace brackets and the arch wires. This self-ligating feature is thought to have a greater therapeutic benefit to the patient than the older, more traditional wiring.

Gold plated braces are usually used on patients who might be allergic to nickel or who might prefer the look of gold over the look of stainless.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are made of ceramic or plastic materials and work much like metal ones. They offer a more cosmetic alternative and blend in more with the natural color of teeth. The ties used with clear braces are available in clear elastic and white metal to help keep these braces less noticeable than metallic braces.

Clear braces are a bit more brittle than metal and have a little higher component of friction. These two factors can make the removal process at the end of treatment somewhat more time consuming and difficult.

A-Braces

A-Braces come in the shape of the letter A. They are applied by the user and are self-adjustable. They can be removed and re-applied and are somewhat more comfortable than more traditional braces. A-Braces can be used as a palate expansion device or a self-adjustable retainer.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are fitted on the inside or tongue side of the teeth. This makes them less visible but can make adjustment more difficult and can take some getting used to as far as the tongue contacting the braces and the wires. Some patients have to adjust to swallowing differently when wearing lingual braces.

Smart Braces

Smart braces or "smart brackets" are a very new concept in orthodontia. The smart bracket contains a microchip that measures forces that are applied to the bracket to tooth interface area. The microchip measures and tracks forces applied to the tooth. The results of this measuring and tracking are that less force may be necessary and the length of treatment may be shortened.

Clear Removable Aligners

Another one of the newest members of the orthodontic family are clear removable aligners. The most prominent of these are the Invisalign brand aligners. These aligners move teeth gradually to their new locations without having to affix brackets to each tooth. Patients who may have very complex cases or who may need jaw surgery, palate expansion or significant tooth extractions may not be good candidates for this new treatment option.
