The Church of Orsanmichele, also once known as San Michele in Orto, is located in Florence and was a lodge built originally for the corn market, later transformed into a church of the Arts, the ancient Florentine guilds. On the site, in Via de'Calzaiuoli halfway between Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral and Palazzo Vecchio, there was a nunnery with vast land to garden, where a primitive oratory was replaced in the mid eighth century from the small church dedicated San Michele Arcangelo, called San Michele in Orto, from which derived the name "Orsanmichele. The church was removed around 1240 to make room for

a patio set to the corn market. The first lodge was built probably by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1290.

On one of the pillars was a painting, perhaps a fresco of the Madonna del Popolo, considered miraculous and the object of great popular devotion. The lodge was badly damaged by a fire July 10, 1304, reconstructed between 1337 and 1350 by Simone Talenti, Neri of Fioravante and Benci di Cione, and it took its current form, larger and rectangular. On July 26, 1343, the day of St. Anne, was ousted by a popular uprising the despotic Duke of Athens Walter VI of Brienne, from which came the dedication of an altar in the church to St. Anna.

The building was the seat of the powerful Brotherhood of Madonna of San Michele in Orto, or company of Laudesi. In 1569 the Grand Duke Cosimo I settled on the upper floors, which were never used for the storage of grain for which they were built, the Notarial Archives, entrusting the adaptation of the salons to Buontalenti. Between eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the marble statues were blackened by a black coating that wanted to look like bronze, to make them all uniform. To this process was not subject the Madonna of the Rose, which since 1628 was inside the church.
