To pursue this career, you need to have good people skills, because a major requirement of your job is dealing daily with patients from all walks of life. You will also be required to be able to communicate so that your patients and their families can be educated properly on the procedure being performed and the best way to recover from surgery effectively. You will also need to demonstrate a love for your job, a degree in the medical field, several years of postgraduate studies in some area of orthopedic surgery, and a license in the state in which you desire to practice.

Orthopedic surgeons can usually do quite well financially. As recently as 2009, the average income for an orthopedic surgeon is just over $400,000, and it is expected to rise through 2016. If you have a desire to help people heal from traumatic bone injuries or help them live a more comfortable life, this career may be just the one for you.
