Orthotic Labs, Biotech
Foot orthotic specialists, are always looking for the best lab services available
so they can offer the best possible services to their clients...and so they make their lives A LOT easier.
The ideal custom foot orthotics lab must have:
Skilled clinicians, techs, and leadership.
Leaders must also be able to offer good clinical and manufacturing advice...and be approachable and available to answer your questions.
Good turn-around time.
Warranties for their work.
Ability to keep up with the latest technologies.
Willingness to work with their clients if they want to do something a bit different.
Honesty and Integrity in how they do business.
It isn't easy to find all of these things in one organization...
Many of the largest foot orthotic labs may offer good turn-around times and warranties, but they often have cookie-cutter style orthotics that all look the same...and may have little capability to build anything a bit out of the ordinary.
Some smaller and mid-sized labs, like Biotech Orthotic Design (in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia, Canada) embody all of the attributes given in the list above...and more.
Brian Stoodley, an experienced pedorthist and a former president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada is the Biotech owner. He truly has his finger on the pulse of the industry. The lab manager, Mark, is a C.Ped who is a genius in organizing production and a very experienced clinician as well. Techs and office staff are also professional and get the job done. Good leadership truly does trickle down in any organization.
Brian and Mark will take the time to answer questions and discuss your options if you have a bit of a difficult case...they are clinicians AND they know the materials and manufacturing process so well that they will come up with things that you've never thought of...even after you've been in practice for 10 years and think you've seen it all.
Better yet, they're actually willing to make it for you. They are an organization that other labs would do well to model as an excellent example of what to look for in a custom foot orthotics lab.
You'll almost always find more personalized and more flexible service in the small to mid sized labs who are not set up as a giant foot orthotics factory, but still take the time to make sure they are meeting the varied needs of their clients rather than trying to accommodate the lowest common denominator of the masses.
Excellent service is how the small and mid-sized labs gain and maintain the loyal following that they deserve...and why they will continue to thrive in the industry.
