Orthotic styles and the types of insoles available

Styles of orthotics

There are 3 styles of orthotics in the market and they are easy to access. What are the styles and how do they differ from each other?

Custom made orthotics

These inserts are for people who suffer from serious biomechanical syndromes which are more severe than the general ones most people deal with. They are usually prescribed by a podiatrist. For example, over pronation is a common disease present. But for this group you find diseases like supination of the foot which is not very common. People who suffer from supinated feet roll their feet outward, a condition known as cavus foot. People with foot ulcers, large bunions or pes planus should see a podiatrist. When customizing orthotics, a cast is used and this produces an impression of the foot. The cast is then taken to a laboratory where a proper orthotic is made. This produces a device which is shaped exactly like the foot it will be used on.

Heat mouldable orthotics

These ones are cheaper than the custom made. They are ordinary, standard, readily available and are off the shelf devices. They are manufactured using medium density EVA material. These devices can be slightly warmed or heated to alter their shape. They are much easier to get used to than custom made ones.

Off the shelf insoles

These are soft to medium density inserts which can be bought in pharmacies, from some physiotherapists and from some websites. They are the easiest to get accustomed to. The soles gradually get customized to the shape of the person's foot. This is as a result of body heat and body weight. EVA material is usually used in the manufacturing process as it does not hurt the arches of the foot. They are easily tolerated by the aged people and young children.

Why wear orthotic devices

Orthotics reduces biomechanical stress and they offer support to joints. They have polymers which reduce the stress and its impact. The orthotics can absorb excessive stress which may not be absorbed by the body due to illness. They can help reduce conditions like over pronation and they reduce the chances of the illness reoccurring and at the same time offering fast healing.

In general, they offer relief for foot injuries and problems. They benefit those who stand or walk a lot whilst at work. With the proper usage of the device, the structure of the foot can be lined up to its correct position. They reduce muscles' fatigue and promote competent performance of the muscles. Their use definitely makes walking, cycling and running much easier.

Types of orthotic insoles available

There are different types of insoles available. There are inserts for sports which are used by athletes, insoles for high heels and catwalk which are used by ladies when modelling or wearing high heeled shoes. The types and names usually depend on the company making them. They each choose to make different kinds and name them differently. For example the Toronto based Ortho tech has its own custom made shoes and orthotics.
