Other Olympic-related Events Around The Uk

Although the main 2012 event is occurring in London this summer

, if you're not going to be in the capital for the games, there's plenty of other Olympic-related event to go to throughout the country. We've rounded up occasions to put in your calendar in Manchester and Nottingham.

Along with the Hampden Park stadium in Scotland and the City of Coventry Stadium, Manchesters Old Trafford football stadium will also play host to the Olympic football competition. In celebration of Manchesters football achievements both past and present, the Gallery Oldham will host a photography, artefact, and history exhibition from Jul 14th until September 23rd highlighting the participation of local celebrities and community sporting clubs in shaping the city of Manchesters football tradition. Not to be outdone, the AND Festival in Manchester will showcase Pigs Bladder Football, an art and biological project that compares the original process of creating footballs from pig bladders to todays technology, and combines with short films, exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and activities, which altogether tell the origins and history of football. The exhibition provides an unusual and insightful look at the game that both adults and children will enjoy.

Manchester has also stretched itself to display its cultural showcase with several music and art performances. Bhangra group Red Baraat will be playing its combination of funk, dhol, and brass band music to audiences at Bridgewater Hall on September 4th, after their whirlwind tour around the U.S. Filling the spaces of three Manchester art galleries, the We Face Forward exhibition highlights the contemporary art of West Africa with a series of photography, sculpture, video and textile installations, all of which emphasize the connections between Manchester and the countries of West Africa.

Similarly, Nottingham will also be hosting a series of art and performance events across the city to highlight its cultural heritage with the Olympics. Bright in the Corner, a dance show collaborating different forms of cultural dance with contemporary performance, will take place on September 27th and celebrates the joy of international understanding and shared humanity produced by the Olympics. Although the city might not be hosting any Olympic sporting events, it has gotten into the sporting spirit with the Riverside Festival. Lasting from the 3rd until 5th of August, the festival will host a variety of sporting events in the Sports Zone, such as a climbing wall and race track, along with a series of interactive dance workshops, art activities, and live music venues. The event ends with a fireworks display against the backdrop of the Trent Bridge and Dragon boat flotilla. The Riverbank Festival is a popular annual event, and with the city pulling out all the stops in celebration of the Olympics, there is no better time to take advantage of deals on hotels and see the festivities for yourself.

Last but not least, if you consider yourself more of a seat-side spectator than participant, all the aforementioned cities will be hosting Olympic Live Sites, where the communities can all gather together and watch the Olympic Games on big screen televisions. These sites provide an ideal opportunity to join in the festive spirit of the Olympic celebrations, without the danger of pulling a muscle!
