Even though that person may have an impeccably clean driving record

, it is typically best to err on the side of caution when thinking or considering the idea of letting them drive your car.

When I was a police officer, I will never forget one call in particular. I was en route to a 911 call in which a patron had phoned police to let them know that there had been an accident at a local convenience store in which the person driving the car had somehow plowed through the front of the convenience store with their pickup truck. Judging from the time of day that it was as well as based on my own experience with drivers in that area, I knew that it probably wasn't related to drunk driving. Well, when I pulled up to the scene, sure enough, there was a car that had clearly gone through the front section of the convenience store.

After interviewing the supposed driver of the vehicle as well as the other two passengers in the vehicle, I got the hunch that something else was going on. I went around and spoke to the witnesses who had seen what had transpired and sure enough, their stories did not match up with what the occupants of the vehicle had told me. According to the driver of the vehicle, she said that she had pulled into the gas station and had parked her car in a parking space located directly in front of the convenience store. However, when she parked the vehicle, she neglected to put the vehicle into 'park'. Her vehicle was a pickup truck, and there were three of them seated inside the cabin area. The one passenger who was seated in the middle wanted to go into the convenience store to purchase something and as a result, the female who was seated behind the wheel of the vehicle started to move as if to get out of the car. As soon as she moved, she accidentally slammed her foot on the gas pedal, still forgetting that she had never put the vehicle into a parked position.

What resulted was the vehicle plowed into the front entryway of the store, smashing all of the glass. While most of this story was true, according to several key witnesses, the female was not the original driver. One of the males was seated behind the wheel of the vehicle, and before I had arrived, they had switched positions within the vehicle and also made sure that they each had their stories straight. Upon further investigation, I found out that the reason the drivers had switched positions was because the original driver of the vehicle did not have a license to operate a motor vehicle. However, what they were not aware of was the fact that I could not have charged the driver with not having an operator license because at the time that the accident occurred and I arrived, the vehicle was located in a parking lot (where you do not need a license to drive). However, if I had physically witnessed the driver pulling into the gas station and/or leaving, I would have been able to legally arrest him.
