Otoplasty: About The Procedure And Recovery Period
The otoplasty procedure, which is cosmetic surgery of the ear
, is performed on thousands of people every year. Despite what a lot of people think, however, it isn't done just to fix ears that protrude too much or are too big. Many times this procedure is performed to correct deformities on children and adults. Sometimes the deformities are congenital, and sometimes they're caused by illness or injury.
What Deformities?
The kind of deformities that are successfully corrected by otoplasty can differ, of course, but there are some that are more common than others. Microtia is a congenital deformity where the outer ear is not fully formed, giving it an unnatural look. Depending on the severity of the condition, the inner canal, and subsequently the hearing, may also be affected.
Cosmetic surgery can make it look more normal, and more involved surgery, often including hearing aid implantation, can help when there is hearing loss. Other deformities include closure over the entrance to the canal, a missing lobe, and in some cases, only the canal with no discernible shape over it. All of these can be corrected with surgery, including most deformities caused by illness or injury.
Procedures
Otoplasty to correct deformities of the ear can vary, depending on the condition. In some procedures, parts of the ear are removed, and creases are made in other parts in order to give the ear a more natural look. In other cases, actual prosthetic ears, or prosthetic parts, are attached to what is there. Semi-permanent hearing devices may be implanted in the canal, and in some instances, a canal actually needs to be created and formed.
Recovery
Recovering from an otoplasty procedure is mostly about common sense. When the procedure is done on a child, the parent or guardian will have to be sure to keep the area clean and dry, and watch for any signs of infection. Adults who have had the surgery need to do the same, and of course, the healing process will usually take longer.
It's important to keep all follow-up doctor appointments, and to alert the doctor if something doesn't feel right during your recovery. Otoplasty can be a blessing for children and adults who suffer from deformities. Innovations in cosmetic surgery have made it possible for surgeons to do some incredible things when it comes to ear deformity correction, and no doubt improvements will continue being made in this area.
