Otoplasty: Improve The Appearance Of Your Ear

Otoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve and enhance the outer ear appearance

. It is more popular in children than adults and the before and after photos often demonstrate dramatic improvement that can aid psychological and emotional well-being.

Before otoplasty, patients may have a congenitally deformed or missing ear, prominent protruding ears, or have experienced traumatic injury, burns, or cancer. Types of procedures include reconstruction, pinback or setback, and reshaping. After otoplasty, patients should be satisfied with the size and shape of their outer auricle and pinna, as well as the symmetry between both sides.

Before otoplasty, your doctor may draw blood tests and perform a general physical. Patients are advised to notify their doctor of any blood thinning medication or aspirin and should stop smoking at least two weeks before and after surgery.

Hair should be clean and pulled back. The operation typically takes two to three hours to complete and may be done under general or local anesthesia. Dramatic or intensive reconstruction may take several separate trips to the operating room for further shaping.

Unfortunately, there are risks and complications that may occur after otoplasty. Abnormal scar formation, hematoma or seroma, distortion caused by overcorrection, or reappearance of protrusion may occur. Your doctor will advise you to wear soft dressings or headbands for up to two weeks. It is important to carefully follow their wound care instructions to avoid infection and necrosis.

The original scar typically takes up to six weeks to heal and will fade into a thin white line over the ensuing months and years. Mild discomfort is common and should resolve within a few weeks. Be sure to let your surgeon know of increasing pain, fever, chills, or sudden change in shape of the new ear.

A typical surgery involves an incision just behind the ear in the natural fold where the pinna meets the head. The necessary skin and cartilage are then removed by the surgeon and shaped into a more aesthetically pleasing form.

Sutures are placed to anchor the new ear in its' new position until healing occurs. Often surgeons will use absorbable sutures and tape to avoid disturbing the shape by removing the stitches later.

Be sure to choose a reputable surgeon in your area that you trust and feel comfortable discussing your concerns and expectations with. Look through available before and after photos to ensure your surgeon can achieve the results you desire.
