Ottawa Makes Spousal Sponsorship Regulations Much Tighter

In a key development, which may not much interest many Canada-bound migrants and

their family members, the Citizenship & Immigration Minister of Canada has declared that come March 5, and Ottawa would tighten the regulations involving spousal sponsorship, with a view to preventing individuals from indulging in fake marriages to migrate to the nation.

Now the sponsored mates or spouses will have no option except to wait for a period of five years -- from the day they acquire the much prized permanent residency (PR) status of the Maple Country -- with a view to sponsoring a new mate or partner.

This development is tailored to deter persons from fraudulently tying the knot with the natives of the Maple Country -- for the sole object of immigration, only to later walk out of such marriage, and sponsor a new mate, even as their Canadian partner is still legally and financially responsible for them for a period of three years.

In this connection, Jason Kenney, the Canadian minister in question, was quoted as saying that he had come across many sufferers of such fake marriages. Apart from the misfortune and pain that came from being crudely taken for a ride, these individuals were rather furious. They believed that their so-called partners had blatantly used and abused them to migrate to the nation of their dreams.

It is no secret that spousal sponsorship proves to be an abuse of the program of immigration when an individual enters into a relationship -- such as a wedding, or common law partnership only to skirt the immigration laws of the country.

The US, New Zealand and Australia have similar restrictions on spousal sponsorships. For instance, Canberra states that in case the sponsor was sponsored, or nominated to the country as a mate, they must wait for a period of five years, prior to sponsoring a different mate.

Meanwhile, a concerned person hailing the move was quoted as saying that the steps undertaken by the Canadian minister, to stop marriage frauds, were highly welcome even as these would prove to be in the overall interests of the immigration system of the country.

But, may critics remain critical with some even saying that the new regulation fails to adequately and properly address the real issues at hand. Whatever could be their observations, one thing is pretty certain -- the cases of such fake marriages would head north in the future even as there would not be such blatant abuse and misuse of the liberal immigration laws of the Maple Country.
