Ouch! Watch Out For That Painful Bunion Bump!

Attention women! We understand the want to wear stylish high heels to accentuate

your dress or work outfit, but they can leave your feet, and even other parts of your body, in severe pain. Yes, high heels do tend to be stylish and gorgeous when paired with the perfect dress, but when has pain ever been pretty? Cramming your feet into shoes with too high of heels or wearing them for too long can cause foot pain in the form of bunions, which are not attractive. If you wear high heels, be sure to make a few extra precautions in addition to treating your foot pain early on. By catching problems early, you will not only avoid many foot issues, but you could possibly make the time you spend in heels a happier day for your feet. Anytime you wear shoes that are too tight for your feet, you are bound to experience extreme pain-sometimes in the form of a bunion.

Understanding Bunions

A bunion is often referred to by podiatrists as hallux valgus, which are the most common forefoot problems. A bunion is a prominent bump that appears on the inside of the foot around the big toe joint, which is a bone that protrudes towards the inside of the foot. It is also common to find your big toe resting under or over the second toe with continued movement. Although many people may not even notice any, some symptoms of a bunion include:

*Inflammation

*Swelling

*Soreness on the side surface of the big toe

Women typically experience bunions more often than anyone else, but anyone can develop them. Bunions can develop from an abnormality in foot function, or even from arthritis. However, wearing inappropriate footwear that does not fit well more commonly causes bunions. If you wear dress shoes or heels, which are tapered in the toe area, you can experience a worsening of your bunion to the point that surgery may be needed.

Why do High Heels cause Foot Pain?

We all experience an increase in demand on our feet throughout the day, so it doesn't take much to let you know when your shoes are uncomfortable. If you begin to feel pain in your feet, do not ignore it. By wearing heels, you place your entire weight and more, crushing down on the base of your toes, rather than evenly distributing your weight. While wearing high heels, pain in your feet can quickly escalate to damage because heels restrict the foot and increases the weight on the area that is being constrained. If you wear a shoe with a heel of two inches or more, they should be worn in moderation, such as an evening out or a wedding-never a full day. Heels that are an inch to an inch and a half are less likely to cause damage, but should still be worn in moderation, which includes not wearing them everyday. By taking a break between days you can give your feet proper rest.

Find Relief from Bunions

The best form of relief from bunions is prevention, which means giving your feet a break from the heels. If you notice a bunion is beginning to form, try soaking your feet in warm water to provide temporary relief in the early stages. To minimize your chances of developing this debilitating condition, do not force your foot into a shoe that does not fit properly. Improper fitting shoes are the leading cause to bunions and foot pain. Instead, choose shoes that conform to the shape of your foot and do not fit too tightly. If you already have a bunion, it is important to wear shoes that have enough room to accommodate the bump, as to not apply pressure on it. When a bunion progresses to the point that walking becomes difficult and conservative treatments are not effective, surgery may be needed to provide relief.

Talk to your podiatrist in Chicago and Lincolnwood for further diagnosis and treatment of bunions. Your feet take the brunt of everything throughout your busy life, so take proper care of your feet now.
