If we don't have religion, we end up only desiring to have immediate pleasure because of the thought of no afterlife

. A person may be able to live a complete atheistic life style if they can see that immediate pleasure does not make our species happy. Those people need to be able to see that to have happiness, we need to do things that are healthy for us. Health makes us happy. The sacrificial nature of religion makes it easy to keep ourselves healthy.
