Out And About Around Corbridge

Corbridge is a small town in the heart of Northumberland

. With a population of just 3500, Corbridge retains much of the charm and character from its long and at times distinguished history. The town's roots lie in its proximity to the Scottish border and, crucially, Hadrian's Wall. Corbridge or Corstopitum as it was known to the Romans was established as a major hub for supplying troops to the wall itself. Corbridge was also the source of building stone for many of the buildings within the town and surrounding villages.

In the 13th century Corbridge was second only to Newcastle in terms of wealth and its citizens made a significant contribution to the anglo-scottish conflict at least in monetary terms although the town itself was frequently the target of Scottish raids. The town was also the sight of the first bridge spanning the Tyne, built in the 13th century. This was eventually replaced in 1674 by the current bridge, a mighty stone structure of seven arches.

Not surprisingly Corbridge has been renowned for its beauty and history for as long as such things have been cherished and the array of small independent shops in the town centre add to the country feel and charm of the area.

That said, the town is well served by both road and rail connections to neighbouring Newcastle and further afield. Several of these larger towns are well within commuting distance. Given its small population, Corbridge is very well furnished with pubs and restaurants. There are four pubs in the town of which at least one serves food including Sunday lunches. Established restaurants serving Indian, Chinese and Italian food can also be found in the centre of town.

Out and about around Corbridge there are plenty of opportunities to keep active and healthy. The Northumberland cycle touring circuit, for example, is almost 220 miles long and passes stunning coastal scenery, through the Pennines and along sections of Hadrian's Wall. You don't have to complete it in one go! Closer to home, Corbridge is a great base for walking, horse riding and has several excellent golf courses within easy reach.

Just five miles upriver from Corbridge, within a very short drive or perhaps a leisurely stroll along the Tyne bank is the larger town of Hexham where you should be able to find everything that you can't find in Corbridge itself.

Reflecting the fact that Corbridge resides at the very heart of Northumberland, the county show is held on local farm land each year around June time and is a celebration of the countryside and everything the county has to offer. Parades of farm animals mixed with live music, local food and arts and crafts a splendid way to spend a day in the country and supporting local businesses too. In addition to the county show, Corbridge also plays host to several other annual events and gatherings including classic car shows and music festivals.

Corbridge has a little of something to offer everyone from its proximity to Newcastle to its country riverside walks; you won't want to leave.
