Outdoor Teak Furniture

Teak is a hardwood prized for its strength and ability to withstand changes in the elements, therefore it is often found on yacht decks and as patio furniture. Its natural oils make it resistant to termites and other pests.

Teak is naturally a dark wood, a yellowish or golden brown, rich and warm. It is oiled for protection, [using teak oil is more than worth the investment] but never stained. If it is varnished, it is more to protect the color from ultraviolet fading than from any need to protect the wood itself. As a hardwood, it is slow growing and the grain is dense. It uses silica in its matrix, and so resists wear.

It originated in Southeast Asia, but is now being plantation farmed in subtropical and tropical areas around the world. Unlike many trees with a narrow range of habitat they can occupy, teak is able to grow in areas that range from 500mm in annual rainfall, to 5000mm.

Because it is expected to stay outside, most teak furniture is made of slats to allow for quick drying. To get the most usable wood, it is usually very straightforward and functional, without much shaping to the slats. This allows you to useoutdoor teak furniture as a backdrop for your design palette.

Outdoor teak furniture can come in sets, with different styles available for different needs. Bar sets (with or without bar extensions to increase the number of teak chairs you can fit); lounge sets for drinks and conversation, with low end tables; and picnic sets for meals.

Teak chairs come in many different styles. Deep seated, reclining, Adirondack, rocking, bar stool, stacking and folding- all are available in teak. They may or may not have armrests. Deep seated chairs are designed to use thick cushions for maximum comfort.

Other outdoor teak furniture includes tables, chaise lounges, benches, storage chests and bars. Most wooden shower chairs are made of teak.

Tables can be end tables, coffee tables, or dining tables; rectangular, square or oval.

Benches can be backed or backless, with arms or armless. Flat benches can also do double duty as tables.

Outdoor teak furniture does not need to put away in winter, saving space in your storage areas, as well as allowing you to make use of it during any mild spells. No need to haul it out, then put it away again before the next storm. The only concession to weather is for the cushions, or making sure your outdoor teak furniture is not likely to be swept away in high winds.

Because of teak's natural ability to withstand the elements and tensile strength, the only reason you would normally need to buy new outdoor teak furniture is that you would like a different style, not that it has degraded. Teak is for anyone who loves wood and wants it in an outdoor setting.
