Over Active Sweat Glads
All of us have faced the wrath of excessive sweat glands
, may those be ours or someone else's. We have all been in that situation where excessive sweating has been not just unpleasant but also very inconvenient and sometimes very embarrassing for people who suffer from it. All of us know that the body needs to sweat to maintain temperature and that is why we endure the process, we find ways to manage the sweating, but it is very important to understand why we sweat excessively to be able to manage the situation. One of the reasons for excessive sweating is our own overactive sweat glands.
All of us have sweat glands, and women have more of those than men. This means that women will tend to sweat more and more often than men will, however, all of us go into a sweating overdrive when we hit puberty because our sweat glands develop to their full potential at the time. This is not the same as sweating a lot throughout our lives. When our glands go into an overactive mode, the process of sweating becomes problematic.
It is a common misconception to think that our glands do not function well, and that is why they become overactive, causing us to sweat more than we normally would. This is not true, the sweat glands function normally, doing their job of producing sweat, the problem is with our sympathetic nervous system (it maintains our body temperature to keep it healthy). The sympathetic nervous system and the sweat glands work together to do this.
So what really happens? Our sympathetic nervous system starts to send out much more signals to the sweat glands than it should, and this causes the glands to produce more sweat than they should. The system could be responding to any irregularity in the external situation or could be in a constant state of feeling hot which makes it want to send more signals to the sweat glands to cool the body down.
The medical term for these overactive sweat glands is hyperhidrosis. This is a situation where people can just not stop sweating, and this can be mentally and physically very upsetting. This situation caused by overactive sweat glands could impact one part of the body or the entire body based on which glands are receiving the signal to produce more sweat. This particular condition only hits a small percentage of the population, and that is why most of them think that it is just the way their body is and nothing can be done about it. This is not true; there are many ways to manage the situation, if the cause is understood.
How do you know if you have overactive sweat glands?
It is not very difficult to find out. People with overactive sweat glands mostly do so in the face, feet, armpits, hands and the head. Also, these parts mostly look white and cracked and may even smell bad. There are no specific reasons that can tell us why we have over activity from our sweat glands, but it is important to seek medical help to help yourself manage it.
