Over the counter remedies for bacterial vaginosis are usually in topical form, available as a cream or gel. Many are simple preparations which aim to increase the PH level to a more acidic one to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria. Some contain Lidocaine, which is a pain-reliever and this can help with the itching and burning and this might be accompanied by Triclosan, which is an antibacterial substance, often found in face washes. Peroxide is another common ingredient.

The only way to completely eliminate bacterial vaginosis is to use a multifaceted approach rather than the one-dimensional approach afforded by over the counter remedies for bacterial vaginosis.
