Overall Boogie Board Maintenance And Tips

If you want to place your own fins on your boogie board

, there are a few things you will need first.

Boogie board fins

Fin tethers

Fin padding

Select swim fins that have been designed for specific use with boogie boards. Some are made for sudden and explosive propulsion in the water so you can maneuver into position when the right wave happens upon you.

Boogie board fins are smaller and lighter than scuba-diving fins so you can kick much faster. Look for fins that have extra padding, or gel inside the footing, for increased comfort. Fins made from rigid materials increase your chance of blistering on your feet.

Know your shoe size when you select fins for boogie boarding. While most models of fins feature adjustable straps for a better fit, you will still need to ensure that your foot will slide comfortably into the body of the fin and that your toes do not feel crushed or otherwise restricted.

The foot compartment should also be flexible enough to conform to the movements of your foot as well. Buy accessories for your boogie boarding fins that will help you to enhance your performance.

Fin tethers, which use small leashes to attach your fins to your ankles, can be good investments since many fins do not float in the water if they fall off your foot. Fin padding, which fits around the straps of most fins, can provide additional comfort, reduce the possibility of blisters and even adapt the fins to a smaller foot size.

Sizes for boogie boarding fins generally conform to standard shoe sizes. Now take care of your equipment. The costs of body boards are expensive and with a little care, they should last a long time.

The worse thing for any board is heat and light. Of course there is little you can do while using the board, the real damage occurs when they're not in use.

The slick part of your board on the bottom should have a white color to reflect light and heat. Don't leave your board out in the sun.

It's best to store them in a cool, dark area. Temperature fluctuations can damage the board because the core is made of one material and the slick that's laminated to it, made of another.

Large temperature differences during the day can warp the board as the materials expand and retract at different rates. A covering of some kind, a bag made for body boards or a tarp is a good investment.

You don't want to cover your board with plastic that can't breathe and allows water to condense inside the bag. A covering will keep the board from scratching and won't allow light to damage the Polyethylene foam.

Waxing your board is a good idea; it helps in riding the board. When you want to remove the wax and apply a fresh coat, use hot water.

Heat water in a teakettle and with your board outside on the pavement (wax will clog drains), pour the hot water on the wax of the board, starting on one end until the wax melts and runs off. If you have a cut or nick in the board, you can repair it with a hot melt glue gun.

Clean the area well and make sure it's completely dry. A minute or two with a hair dryer near the area will insure it's dry but don't over use the heat from the dryer.

Apply the glue until it fills in the area and within ten minutes, it will set and be ready for use. If you have a tear or a delaminated section of the board, pull back the damaged section, again making sure it's clean and dry and generously apply glue with the gun before pressing the pieces back together.

It's advisable to apply some weight to the area until it dries completely. For a bubble, you can slice the affected area with a cross cut.

Pull back each piece, making sure everything is clean and dry, apply glue to each of the four sections, and press them back in place. Apply some kind of weight to the area until it dries.

Always carry your board. Never pile beach gear on the board and use it as a sled.

You might as well sandpaper the bottom. It's a good idea not to allow friends and worse, strangers to use your board.

If you store your board for the season, put the board in a place where nothing will be stacked on top of it and where heat and light won't affect the material. If you have room, under the bed is a great place to store it.
