Economic recovery accelerated in the fourth quarter of 2009-10, led mainly by a double-digit growth in the industrial sector. This lifted the overall real GDP growth for 2009-10 to 7.4 per cent compared to 6.7 per cent in the previous fiscal. Industrial growth rebounded to 9.3 per cent, while services growth moderated to 8.5 per cent. The agriculture sector posted a better-thane xpected growth of 0.2 per cent despite severe drought. The economy is likely to maintain this momentum in this fiscal as well, notwithstanding persistent uncertainties about the global growth outlook. While the normal monsoon so far this year has brightened the prospect for agriculture growth, industrial growth is likely to return to its trend level. Profitability pressures evident in first quarter of 2010-11
Increase in input costs and deterioration in pricing power due to intensifying competition impacted the profitability of India Inc during April-June 2010. The overall performance of companies during the quarter confirmed the profitability pressure that Indian corporates have been facing since January-March 2010.
Corporate earnings also fell short of market expectations, as reflected in the downward revision in estimates since the start of the earnings season.
