Overcome Obstacles To Your Sales Career
Sales is a hard business
Sales is a hard business. As a salesperson, youre going to encounter a lot of rejection. In fact, youre going to spend most of your time being rejected. A lot of people try a career in sales only to burn out after a few weeks.
Much has been said about the top earners of the sales industry being born salesmen. But the truth is, salespeople are not born, they are made. A salesman is a product of lots of dedication and hard work. If you want to be a good salesperson, there are a few attitudes that you need to develop and a few key concepts that you need to understand. Read the following guidelines in order to learn how to overcome obstacles to your sales career.
1.Remember the Law of Averages. Regardless of how good a salesperson you are, majority of your attempts to sell will fail. Not everyone will want the product that youre selling. In fact, 90% of the people you will approach will probably say no. The other 10% will buy. If you pitch your product to ten people, youll manage one sale. But what if you pitch your product to a hundred? Whenever you feel as if your sales career is going nowhere, just remember the law of averages.
2.Understand Rejection. The most common reason for failing in sales is a fear of rejection. No one wants to be rejected. A lot of people derive self-esteem from being accepted for who they are as individuals. But a fear of rejection is a big obstacle to a salesman. Overcome obstacles of this nature by understanding that when a client rejects your offer, hes not rejecting you as a person. Hes only expressing his dissatisfaction with the product. Dont let a fear of rejection affect the progress of your sales career.
3.Dont Take It Personally. Theres no such thing as a perfect product. Sooner or later youre going to meet someone who isnt satisfied with it. Sometimes a salesperson will encounter a bad review or comment regarding the product he or she is selling and become emotional over it. To overcome obstacles like that, dont take them personally. These are not personal attacks on your character or credibility. These criticisms may even allow you to gain insights about the product you are selling and help your sales career.
4.Maintain a Positive Body Language. You can sell more with a smile, than with any information you memorized from the brochure. But the amount of rejection a salesperson encounters each day may make it difficult to maintain a positive attitude. To overcome obstacles that may reduce your morale, try to have fun at your job. Share jokes with your clients, chat with the personnel, and, basically, make friends with strangers. Who knows? You might even meet someone who can help you with your sales career.
5.Take Care of Your Appearance. Many people wish for a world where people are not judged based on how they look. Unfortunately, that is the harsh reality. How you are perceived by others is heavily reliant on the clothes that you wear. If you are having difficulty trying to improve your appearance, hire someone to give you a makeover. If you make it a habit to do what it takes to overcome obstacles that you encounter, your sales career will never be in jeopardy.
A career in sales is not easy, but it isnt hard either. If you are mentally and emotionally prepared to overcome obstacles, you have a good chance of succeeding. Just remember that the best salespeople in the world are those who only sell what they themselves would buy.
