Overcoming Dandruff
You can have a lot of self-confidence, but dandruff can really transform this confidence into shame and shyness. You think of nothing else, you think about it all the time, you wonder the people around you have noticed. But fortunately, dandruff can be treated and you can really rid yourself of it.
Having dandruff can be very annoying and potentially disabling for some people. But with the diversity and the wide range of products and treatments available, such as shampoos or lotions, we can eradicate them quickly and easily.
What causes dandruff?
Under normal conditions the skin of the scalp, like the one of our whole body, is renewed once a month: new cells form in the deep layers of the dermis and eliminate dead cells by pushing them out of the epidermis. But when a tiny fungus called pityriasis starts to grow on the scalp, it speeds up and also messes up the whole process. As a result, dead cells have no time to disintegrate slowly, so they cling to each other and concentrate in the form of flakes on the surface of the scalp.
Stress, hormonal imbalance, excessive sweating, acid diet, or repeated abuse of the scalp through special shampoos, perms, coloring, are all factors causing dandruff.
Some people prone to eczema, psoriasis or who have greasy hair are also more likely to have dandruff. However, we distinguish two types: dry ones, like snow on clothing, and fat ones, thick and clinging to the scalp. But when dandruff is accompanied by itching, it is urgent to take appropriate measures.
How to remove dandruff
A dandruff treatment is mandatory. To be 100% effective, it must contain at least one of three active ingredients: an antifungal and antibacterial agent such as zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide, to reduce the number of fungi, an anti-proliferative such as tar coal, to slow production of abnormal skin cells, or an active keratolytic such as sulfur or salicylic acid, to dissolve the flakes peeling off and remove the layer of keratin on the surface of the skin.
In addition to your dandruff shampoo, do not hesitate to do at least once per week a comprehensive treatment such as a pre-shampoo or a conditioner, in order to ventilate and cool the scalp.
Eventually, you can opt for vitamins or supplements containing provitamin A, vitamin B, C and E, or selenium.
How to prevent dandruff from coming back
Use a anti dandruff shampoo that you choose according to your type of scalp (fat, dry, scaly, irritated), your type of hair (thin, colored, damaged) and your type of dandruff (oily, dry tenacious, temporary).
Do not "mistreat" your hair anymore, instead mass and rinse it gently, then comb or brush it gently.
Always rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water and finish with a blast of cold water.
Remember to regularly wash your comb or brush in order to prevent the fungus to infect your scalp again.
Limit the use of styling gels, sprays or paint, as well as the use of helmets.
Space out the time between perms, straightening and dyes (no more than once per month).
Be sure to find (or keep) a balanced diet, neither too rich nor too acidic.
And finally, make sure you don't take head lice for dandruff. If you feel like your scalp is itching, you might have dandruff but you might as well have head lice. Those parasites lay eggs that can easily be taken for dandruff as they have about the same size and color.
