Overcoming Obstacles As An Artist
Many people assume that because artists often enjoy their work so much
, the life of an artist must, from a professional point of view, be an easy one. There is, of course, some basis for the idea, in that the work of creation is in many ways fun, challenging and interesting, and artists generally work for themselves or for chosen clients, according to a relatively relaxed and flexible schedule. Moreover, a finished work can bring a unique and wonderful sense of achievement and fulfillment. To people in other professions, it may well seem like a fairly ideal state of affairs.
Yet all artists know that this is not the case. However much they love their work, professional artists are familiar with the moments of frustration, doubt and concern that play a role in the creative process. When the piece isn't going well, or you get to the stage when you're not sure that the project was worth it or a good idea after all, the suggestion that your chosen career is perfect would probably make you laugh.
These and similar problems are almost inevitable when you spend time engaged in creative activity. It is important to accept them, to recognize them for what they are, and not to waste extra time worrying about whether it has long term implications for your work or choices. The main thing is to bear strongly in mind the faith you have in yourself as an artist, and in the value of your work. Even if it doesn't feel like it at that moment, you know that in more general terms you are satisfied with where you are and what you are doing. Push past the problem moment, find a way out of the artistic difficulty you are facing, and move on.
Another common concern that faces professional artists is that of sales. By nature, this kind of income is less reliable and less regular than an ordinary salary, and many artists worry about selling their work. A key issue here is promotion; people can only buy your work if they're first aware that it's there. For this reason, exhibiting in galleries, both brick-and-mortar ones and online galleries such as Art-Mine, is useful because it gives you both greater legitimacy and greater presence, increasing your number of viewers and encouraging them to take you seriously.
Showing in galleries often involves a cost, either financial or in terms of time and work. Yet there are other ways of promoting your work where cost can be kept to a minimum. For example, make sure to woo the local area. Contribute an article to the local paper about working as an artist, bring your work to local markets or fairs, leave leaflets in relevant places around town.
Balancing all this with your work itself and with your responsibilities to your family and friends can also be a challenge. Don't let it get on top of you, but accept the importance of all the aspects of your life and work out how to maintain a balance between them all. At some times, one may require more time and effort than the rest - this isn't a problem, just make sure to readjust when possible. Set aside time for everything you need to do, and make sure those close to you know the rules.
Most importantly, don't let your worries stop you from enjoying your work!
