Overcoming panic attacks requires that you also learn how to deal with setbacks.

Panic attack sufferers usually experience a state of high anxiety on a daily basis which causes them to avoid certain responsibilities or activities. Anxiety is defined as a deep fear or apprehension that results when a sufferer anticipates an imagined or real threat, event or situation. This apprehension is a very common human emotion.

While most people can move past this emotion in a positive manner, panic attack or anxiety sufferers are paralyzed by this fear. They are usually consumed with feeling of doom and gloom. With an increase in this fear, uncontrollable bodily sensations occur such as sweating, trembling, heart palpitations, etc. Sufferers usually fell like they are about to pass out or die.

When suffers attempt to overcome this condition through various steps, setbacks are bound to occur which usually lead them back to square one and a lack of confidence in their ability to overcome this condition. The setback usually makes them feel like they will never overcome the condition and that there is no point in trying.


Here are some steps to help you move past a setback and continue striving to overcome panic and anxiety attacks. It is important to note that setbacks will occur on the road to recovery. Like an alcoholic, you will fall off the wagon, but it is important to get back on it until panic and anxiety attacks become a thing of the past.

It is also important to know that setbacks are a part of your healing. In order to move past the panic or anxiety, it is important that you work with the protective part of your psyche that does not want you to overcome this fear because it wants to maintain your comfort zone. Setbacks occur because of this resistance to change and you need a greater understanding on how to work with your protective side.

To move beyond the anxiety, you need to work with the protective side of your personality and teach it that there really is nothing to fear. When setbacks occur, it is an indication that you now need to take your new understanding and work with your protective side, which is resisting this change.

When you continue to work with your protective side and not give into it, you will become more empowered and become more confident about your ability to overcome panic attacks.

Steps to Overcome Setbacks

1. Persistence is extremely important. The more you perform a behavior necessary for your healing and follow through, the easier it will become. Our thoughts and behaviors are a result of our daily habits so be persistent and keep at it. When you are persistent, setbacks can generally be turned to your advantage and you shall gain strength from this.

2. Maintain your confidence that you shall overcome this condition. One way is to create a vision board of how you would like your life to be and keep this in a visible place. The more you see this, this more confident you shall become in overcoming. Ensure that your confidence remains intact. When you lose it, gain it back by encouraging yourself.

3. Remember your past successes that will motivate you for greater achievement in the future and to keep at it until you are free from debilitating panic and anxiety attacks.

4. Document your progress by keeping a diary or journal. Reward yourself periodically for small successes which will keep you motivated and help you to strengthen yourself when your revisit your past documented experiences and see how far your have come.


5. Be proud of all the positive and negative experiences because without them, you would not be the amazing person that you are because of what you have survived and overcome.

6. Be kind to yourself. When you give in to the fear and experience setbacks do not be cruel to yourself. This will only serve to keep you unmotivated to persist on your quest.

Recovery is a gradual process and includes several bumps on the road to recovery. As long as you are convinced and believe that you shall overcome, it will happen even in the midst of setbacks. Keep your eye on the prize. Haven't you lived with fear long enough? It is no way to live! There is so much out there waiting for you beyond the fear.
