Overflow Incontinence What are the Symptoms and Causes

Incontinence itself is not a disease but rather a symptom of some underlying condition. Those conditions can run a wide gamut and as a result, incontinence has been classified into several types. Overflow incontinence is a form of the condition that is commonly found in older men but can occur in younger people of both genders.

Overflow is an accurate description of what happens. When the bladder cannot completely void itself then it will quickly fill beyond its capacity and "overflow" through the urethra. This is typically caused by a weakened bladder muscle that cannot completely compress and void all of the urine. It can however, be caused by a blockage in the urethra and this is the typical issue with older men.

When men hit their 60s there is a tendency for their prostate gland to enlarge. The urethra passes directly through the prostate and if it squeezes off the urethra it will not allow a normal flow of urine. Symptoms of this condition include weak flow, dribbling and a frequent need to urinate particularly at night.

Also associated with prostate problems are narrow bladder necks or urethra which can be side effects of radiation or chemo therapy treatments for cancer of the prostate. This reduced channel can restrict the flow of urine and cause involuntary leakage.

Other possible causes include urinary tract infections, stones in the urethra or bladder and even constipation.

The place to start to determine just what your condition is is your doctor's office. Most instances of incontinence can be handled with exercise and lifestyle changes but even if you need something more powerful there are medications and surgical solutions available as well. Your doctor will undoubtedly start with the least invasive therapy and gradually work up until a solution is found that works for you.

Overflow incontinence is just one form of the condition and in order for you to effectively manage it you need a medical evaluation.
