The gutter system of your house is one part that is usually overlooked for its function and more emphasis is given on its design and how it can complement the design of the exterior of the house. It actually has an important purpose and taking it for granted might cause greater problems to the ceilings and walls of the house. Gutter systems may incur damages when not properly maintained. Most of the time, repairs will do to make it function once again. But there are times when total makeover of the gutter system may be needed. Here are some indications that you might need to do just that.

If your gutter system is not functioning as it should, you may want to try to repair it. But if after doing such the problem quickly re-surfaced, consider giving your gutter a makeover. If more than half of the gutter system is not functioning as it should, it might be better to replace everything all together. There is a possibility that the problem may have been fixed but the parts that remained may become the next one to be problematic.

If you did a total makeover of the house, or at least the roofing system, you might want to consider changing the gutter system. This is important especially if the surface area of the roof has increased. The greater the surface area of the roof, the higher the volume of water that will go to the gutter during rainy days. The old gutter system, therefore, might not be designed to such volume of water.

If maintenance requirement of the gutter is becoming more frequent, it is a good time to think about replacing the whole system. Not only does it consume more time, there is a chance that it may not function as it should in case maintenance has been overlooked and a sudden downpour or rain occurred. Also, if there are trees that are now reaching the roof level that before hasn"t yet, there is a good chance that the design of the gutter has to be replaced to prevent more frequent maintenance and damages.

Even if the gutter is just a small part of the house, it has its specific function to protect the entire house. Taking if for granted might cause more damages than what should have been. So it is important to think of the function of the gutter system more than its design.
