With all references you should make sure you follow up with them in detail, but what should you ask them?

3. Did they start and finish on time? If not, why not?

5. Were they tidy? Removing and replacing a roof involves a great deal of disruption! How did they kepe this to a minimum and did they leave your house and yard totally free of debris when they left?

6. Overall, how satisfied were you with their work

Most importantly, would you use them again and recommend them to you friends? This is the true test of how satisfied they were with their choice - willingness to refer to a friend is key. Strong referrals are perhaps a better endorsement of a company and their service than anything else.

Clearly also ask the reference anything that particularly concerns you or is unique to your house. It is very important to ask specific questions - remember that the contractor will most likely provide you with a positive reference, so it pays to dig a little below the surface!
