Overseas Opportunities for MBAs in a Global Economy

Overseas Opportunities for MBAs in a Global Economy

In such a globalized economy, it is important that business school students also learn to think and interact on an international level. In fact, it is becoming more and more commonplace that MBA programs in the United States have a more internationally broad curriculum, preparing them to work with or even in other countries around the world. This is especially something to consider during this recession, while certain overseas economies are actually expanding. Businessweek recently published an article titled "Why MBAs are Going East." This does not mean that the idea of becoming a Long Island accountant has suddenly risen in popularity (as I foolishly thought when I first saw the headline). Instead, the article discusses the growing movement of business school grads seeking employment in China. Interviewees suggest that this search for employment opportunities overseas is a permanent result of the globalized economy. So, with a highly global curriculum being taught in universities and an increasingly large population of MBA holders working overseas, it seems it won't be long before financial planning firms in the United States expect their employees to be well-traveled and able to work well with other nations. Forget Wall Street. New York is no longer far enough East. Even your average Smithtown accountant would need at least a base knowledge of foreign economies. An interesting alternative that some MBAs have chosen in order to gain experience overseas is joining a volunteer group to support developing nations through financial advice and contribution. Two successful programs exist through which they can do this: MBA Enterprise Corps (MBAEC) and MBAs Without Borders (MWB). Both groups send over MBA holders to work with the local governments and help them make important economic decisions. Of course, there is always the option of simply studying abroad while working toward an MBA. There are plenty of opportunities to gain overseas experience and even employment. Whether your goal is to become a CPA in Long Island or a corporate tycoon in China, it is undeniable that the United States is no longer the sole economic promise land.
