There is another branch of crime where traditional investigations do not work, for e.g. hacking, cyber fraud, phishing, identity theft, data theft these all comes under as cyber crime. It can be defined as illegal electronic operation that targets the security of computer systems and data processed by them. Even thought it may appear that effects of cyber crime are not life threatening but in fact they are. They can destroy somebody's perfectly normal life by hacking their credit cards and bank accounts. Over the time surveys have shown that people are more scared of internet theft of their bank and credit card information then they are of actual robberies. Whenever crime are committed cyber forensics experts try to get the clues and catch the culprits.
Cyber forensic experts are normally very adept in network security as most cyber crimes take place over networks. They are very well trained in data recovery and encryption as they are the most likely target of the information theft. An ideal cyber forensic expert should also be aware of the cyber laws as many of such cases can be taken to the court where the expert can be called as examiner. The work of cyber forensics expert might not be limited to only computers but extend to work and mobile phones, PDA's, USB drives, Media Player etc.
Most corporate houses dont really trust cops and have their own experts for guarding their information and security. Evidence collection for a cyber crime is not easy and a lot of care is needed in collection of evidence and processing it. The job of forensic expert is difficult and therefore they require some tools that can be used to preserve the storage devices and extract data from them.
