Oxazolidines Are Effective Diluting Agents
With the continuous improvements in chemical industry
, there has been a considerable effect on the solvent-borne industrial coatings market. In the past few years, a large number of technical advancements have taken place in water based coatings technology, which has not reached from consumer house paint market to industrial market. Nevertheless, the strict VOC regulations have led to the development of a more feasible water based alternative to solvent borne technology. There are still some restrictions apply with the specific properties of chemical and abrasion resistance in coating performance.
These advancements have not only affected the water based technology but the field of high solids coatings as well. The improvements are eventually implemented with lower molecular weight components to get the least possible viscosity with the minimum use of solvent. However, there is specific limit to molecular weight reduction, as it can lead to issues related with loss of coating performance. For example, the double pack polyurethane coatings market has witnessed this change. Generally, these systems are made of an acrylic polyols and an HDI-based polyisocyanate. These form polyurethanes deliver unmatched performance qualities along with excellent chemical resistance.
There is one solution to maintain the coating benefit of solvent systems, whilst reducing the VOC, is to fix in a reactive diluents. This is the reason why Oxazolidines are effective diluting agents. Incozol is a low viscosity bi-Oxazolidines reactive diluents considered as a co-reactant in polyurethane coatings to attain low VOC. It is made of two Oxazolidines rings connected by a carbonate bridge, which supports low viscosity by limiting intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
There are various advantages of Oxazolidines as they are effective reactive diluent agents. It possesses excellent polyols and solvent compatibility. Moreover, it poses low intrinsic viscosity 50 mPas@20C. There is no side effect on the coating properties including film hardness development and resistance, gloss and weathering properties.
The Incozol series of Oxazolidines consists of a range of mono and bis-oxazolidines, which hydrolyses on exposure to moisture yielding reactive amine and hydroxyl functionalities.
