PPC Advertising - The Importance of Google Ad Groups
And this seems to be a sticking point for a lot of beginning Google Ad Word marketers. Effective keyword grouping improves Quality Score; which leads to cheaper costs per click and a higher ad position.
Google Adgroup Basics
The idea is to segment your keywords into small, manageable groups and subgroups by relevance. Each group should contain closely related word groups or word stems. The first step to organizing any account is how keywords are bundled into Ad Groups. Start with your main keywords and build off of them by taking related ideas and keywords and creating additional, but separate groups.
And it doesn't matter how many you have... It is better to have 100 Ad Groups with 10 keywords each than 10 Ad Groups with 100 keywords each.
For example, if you sell digital cameras, and you've organized your campaigns by brand, create multiple ad groups based on the models of each brand. A series of individual groups might look like this...
1) Kodak Digital Cameras, then include the models of each Kodak camera you offer like Kodak M790, Kodak M810, etc
2) Olympus Digital Camera, then the individual model numbers of each
3) Sony Digital Camera and the individual models you offer for Sony
Increase Ad Group Relevance
Once you have your keywords broken down into tightly focused ads and groups, this will allow you to make super relevant ads to each ad group.
Instead of "Digital Cameras At the Lowest Price", you can now use "Kodak Digital Cameras" or "Sony Digital Cameras".
This is the way Google wants you to set up your campaigns, and the AdWords system will reward you for doing it. Remember, the more relevant your ad is to your ad group, the higher your Quality Score is going to be.
Testing Your Ads
AdWords doesn't charge you to test new ads; so always be testing at least two to three new ads against your current best performing ad. Many times you may think you have the perfect ad; but then you test another one and are completely surprised when it beats the pants off of your current best performing ad.
Don't make this decision yourself; let the marketplace determine which ad is best. They will tell you because they vote with their clicks.
Don't Forget Your Tracking
PPC advertising should be no different than any other advertising campaign in the sense that you need to track everything. You MUST use Google AdWords tracking or any other tracking software to determine which groups and keywords are actually making you money.
Try and track down to the individual keyword level. That way you can determine which keywords in which groups are performing; and you can also identify those keywords that are not working thru your tracking and eliminate them from your ad group.
Always Use Tightly Focused Google Ad Groups
Do not underestimate the importance of using tightly focused adgroups. The more focused your groups are, the more quality clicks you will receive due to better quality scores. You'll also find it easier to write relevant and eye-catching ads around groups with tight relevance. Then thru tracking you can discover the best performing ad groups for your campaign.
Leave the groups that are getting good results; and modify or delete the ones that are not performing as well. By creating very specific, tightly focused ad groups, you'll see higher Quality Scores as well as cheaper costs per click on any PPC advertising campaign.
