Today shrink wrapping plays a very important part for a vast range of industries, be it for the collation of a number of smaller packs to aid transportation, or if its simply to protect and enhance the look of a single product such as cd's,computer games and many other retail items. There is a wide range of materials such as pvc,Polyethylene and polyolefin's all which are available to shrink wrap and collate items. They all work in basically the same way in that when heat is applied they take on their memory effect and shrink down hence the phrase shrink wrapping film.

Generally for collation Polyethylene is the preffered option, although this can have machine isuess due to the need for higher tempratures normally only created with a three phase shrink tunnel.For the smaller artisan producer this may be a problem as along with the extra footprint these larger machines require. One of the options is to use alternatives such as pvc or polyolefin which can be shrunk by smaller shrink wrap machines. Pvc can become britle and split leading to spoilt packs and the necessity to double handle and re wrap. Polyolefin on the other hand presents non of these problems and when a multi layer film is used then the finished packs can be very strong and presentable.

PVC film is considered to be more appropriate for DVD and CD packaging. You may also use it to pack several non-edible products, such as fruit and other such things. It is also more brittle as compared to polyolefin film but is not very good to use when it comes to bundling of various products and packaging of food items. Also, PVC films give out some odor that may make you feel irritated. However, this problem can be solved if you use PVC films in a properly ventilated room. Alternatively, polyolefin film is especially popular to pack food products, bundling multiple products and gift baskets. This film doesn't tear very easily and is more flexible as compared to PVC

films. Also, it doesn't emit much of odor and can comfortably be

used indoors and also reduces bulid up on the sealing system.
