Pacquiao Vs. Mayweather - The Biggest Buyrate In Ppv History?
Manny Pacquiao and Floyd "Money" Mayweather have both reportedly agreed to a fight on March 13
, 2010 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Both fighters will receive an upfront payment of $25 million for the fight. This fight has the potential to be not only the biggest fight in terms of pay per view revenue in 2009, but it very well could be the fight to receive the most buys in pay per view history. For the sake of comparison, the biggest PPV buyrate in the world of professional wrestling was garnered from Wrestlemania 23, which had 1.2 millions buys, and the biggest buyrate in the history of mixed martial arts came from UFC 100, which had 1.6 million buys.
Manny Pacquiao is currently rated as the number 1 pound for pound boxer by Ring Magazine. At age 31, he has a professional boxing record of 50 wins, with only 3 losses and 2 draws. 38 of his wins came via knockout. His last fight was against Miguel Cotto, which took place on November 14, 2009 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Vegas. Pacquiao won via technical knockout. The fight, which was the main event on a card with various other fights, received 1.25 buys on PPV, which brought in around $70 million. Pacquiao earned nearly $22 million for the fight and Cotto earned close to $12 million.
Floyd Mayweather was rated by Ring Magazine as the number 1 pound for pound boxer from July 2005 to June 2008. He has a professional record of 40 wins, 25 via knockout, and he is currently undefeated. His last fight was against Juan Manuel Marquez which took place on September 19, 2009, also at the MGM Grand Arena. Mayweather won by unanimous decision. This fight was the return of Mayweather, who after a knockout victory over Ricky Hatton in December 2007, decided to take 2 years off from boxing. This break eventually became a full on retirement for the 32 year old boxer. The fight had over 1 million buys and brought in $52 million in PPV revenue.
There has been some doubt over the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight in recent weeks, as the promoters of both fighters have had disagreements over Olympic style drug testing. While the fight coming to fruition may be in doubt right now, there is way too much money to be made by both sides to let this opportunity pass them by, and they more than likely reach an agreement by the time fight is supposed to take place next March.
