Painless Root Canals with Houston's Pampering Dental Team at Life Smiles

Start talking about a root canal and everybody in the room flinches. Just the name " root canal" sounds bad. In spite of its bad reputation, a root canal could be your tooth's best friend. That's right! If your tooth is badly damaged, decayed or infected, a root canal could let you keep that tooth instead of having it pulled.

An dld-fashioned root canal, in an old fashioned dental office, might have been painful, but here at my Houston office, root canals are painless and comfortable. In fact, like all the procedures here at Life Smiles, a root canal can actually be an enjoyable experience!

We start by offering sedation dentistry to anyone who is at all nervous or has trouble getting numb, and proceed with all the pampering extras patients have come to expect from my office.

Take a minute when you first arrive to sit down and enjoy the relaxing and therapeutic scents of aromatherapy and a cup of tea. Take a deep breath. Our reception area is so beautiful, you may want to come a few minutes early just to unwind. Then, ask for a glass of wine and stroll with us back to your treatment room for a paraffin hand dip during the procedure. Put on a pair of noise canceling headphones, snuggle up under a blanket and you may forget why you are here. Many patents take a little nap, especially if they have had sedation dentistry, and wake to a warm towel and some lip balm to freshen up and feel soothed.

You may have some minor discomfort after treatment is complete, but trust us, it should be very minor and we can help you with post-treatment pain management as well.

What is a Root Canal?

Patients often ask me why the procedure is called a root canal. It is an odd sounding name but it is actually quite descriptive. Inside your tooth is a network of blood vessels, connective tissue and nerves. This is all contained inside your tooth in what is commonly known as the pulp. This pulp is under the hard surface of your tooth and extends all the way into your tooth's roots in other words, the root canal. When there is infection in this canal it causes an abscess or a pocket of pus to form. In severe cases, this abscess can extend all the way to the tips of the roots and cause problems and infection in the bone. To remove this infection, we remove the dental pulp, along with any debris, and seal your tooth with a porcelain dental crown. Patients are surprised at the relief they feel after a root canal and happy to keep their own tooth instead of having it pulled.
