Paintballing: The Thrill Of Hunting A Stag
Paintballing has become a widely acceptable and much-enjoyed activity that combines entertainment with the adrenaline-filled rush of warfare
.
It was devised in American almost 35 years ago by a trio of men that wanted to recapture the thrill of hunting a buffalo, but now the victim of choice is a stag not the antlered type, but a groom-in-waiting.
Paintballing has become one of the first choice events for stag parties as it combines excitement, drama, team-work and most of all a memorable experience to provide much discussion over the beers that will be drunk in the evening and long into the future.
The common setting is in rural woodland, which is littered with authentic props from tanks to aeroplanes, capturing the scenario of troops landing in an unknown location with an important mission to accomplish as if their lives depended on it.
The players are kitted out in camouflaged gear and armed with paintball guns, grenades and plenty of spare ammo. They devise a strategy with their platoon and then take on the enemy with force, guile and instinct.
The heart-racing moments of knowing the target is close, or an enemy combatant is closer are exhilarating, as is the pleasure of picking off the opposition with a well-timed shot. However, give away your position with a pull of a trigger or a breaking of a twig under foot and you could be pummelled with paint-filled bullets and you are out of the game albeit temporarily.
Each location will have their own scenarios and games, which suit the setting, but popular favourites are capture the flag and king of the castle, while no stag do is complete without a game of hunt the stag, where the man of the moment is sent out on his own often dressed in comic fashion to make hiding not only cowardly but very difficult.
A stag weekend in Nottingham, home of the master-archer Robin Hood, should always include a game of paintballing with it boasting one of the best-equipped sites in Europe.
Skirmish paintball in Sherwood Forest comes complete with a Castle Colditz Base a one thousand square metre structure complete with a five metre high wall. Would you be able to escape?
The Berlin Wall may have crumbled, but it has been rebuilt in Nottingham woodland for another epic battle between east and west. Could you find your way over the wall with snipers lurking in the trees?
