Painting For Still Life
For one female artist, when she was younger she loved drawing horses as much as she loved riding them
. Her career is one which involves painting horses and other subjects of the natural world and what she can thank for it is her early training plus her many years of experience as an artist. What you will see in her pastel and watercolor paintings are horses, reindeer, hens, and especially dogs.
Her age was 11 when her family from Philadelphia moved to the present county. Her mother and sister were like her father who painted for fun other than his work as a commercial artist.
Considered to be real important to an artist by her father is drawing. Considering the structure of the animals she paints, these details are evident.
Considering how she loves painting animals, she started using dogs and cats as subjects too. She and her loving husband have two large dogs and a cat at their present home. Sometimes she also considers painting pets for private commissions.
Light seems to distinctly stand out in her paintings, whether it's the bright white of daylight or the darker amber hues of evening. She said she cares a lot about having a sense of light in her paintings.
Her use of watercolor can be attributed to this. For her, a series of transparent washes going over paper is what she considers watercolor.
Glowing through the paint is the white paper. Light created in a different manner happens with oil paint. By painting everything around it, light will be revealed.
Considering the use of watercolor, artists need to paint around what is white. When painting in oil, the artist must first paint in the dark shadows, adding the light later.
With her career, there is a desire from the artist to take on the challenge of luminosity in oil paintings. What she wants is some time spent for painting in oil as she loves the impressionists.
Actually, her move to the present location at the countryside from the former town is what inspires her today. She takes pictures of old farmhouses and landscapes in the foothills as she explores the back roads. The old farmhouses are sometimes torn down and she is concerned about these.
When it comes to acknowledging and protecting the old houses, she feels the urgent need to paint them. She says she loves the historic architecture, obviously.
For this passionate artist, another endeavor is still life paintings. From texture to detail, she suggests these subtly rather than paint realistically or use a photographic style.
What her paintings of pets focus on include the animal's facial expressions and the detail. Other than going to a known school of art, she also attended the Maryland institute college of art in Baltimore.
What she did for much of her career was work as a nurse but she began painting professionally since age 25. In the ensuing years, she continued to build up her painting reputation most especially in the areas of portraits, pets, architectural subjects and florals. She does her nursing duties once a week.
