Before you begin make sure you have all the supplies you will need to create your rug. You may want to try painting an old rug first to make sure that you can do it correctly and you get the look you are trying to create. Add some paintbrushes to your supply list as well as paint. Choose from fabric paint or fabric dye. You will also need a pattern to go by. You may want to use some stencil as well.
You have all your supplies ready now it is time to begin. Take the idea that you have in your head and put it on paper before you start. You must know exactly what design you wish to create. If you seen the look that you like in a magazine cut the picture out so you can refer back to it often.

Your rug should be painted with fabric paint because fabric paint will last during high traffic wear and it is washable without wearing off. If you will be using stencil or stamps you still want to use fabric paint. To begin, place the fabric paint on a palette or a piece of waxed paper. If you are using stencil place the stencil on the rug and secure it. Using a stencil brush dip the brush in the paint and blot excess paint off. Using the dry brush technique will give you a perfect paint.
Fabric paint can be purchased at almost any store. You can purchase several colors or color coordinate depending on what you want to go with. You want everything to match and coordinate well. It can easily come off of your hands by using water and soap.
Fabric dye is another choice for painting a rug. It doesn't come off of your hands well so be very careful when using. You can purchase these dyes at markets all around the world. Use the same instructions with the fabric dye as you would with fabric paint. Be careful that your dyes do not bleed. To avoid this, make sure that you remove all access paints and dyes from the brush before painting.
People are usually afraid to use the fabric dye in fear that the colors will bleed on each other, ruining the masterpiece they set out to create. But you shouldn't let fear stop you from using it.
When you begin you may want to start at a corner of your rug to make sure that you are creating the look you set out to do. Once your area rug is completed you can show off your wonderful masterpiece for years to come.
