The Rucellai Palace is one of the finest examples of fifteenth-century architecture in Florence, located in Via della Vigna Nuova 18. Its facade was designed by Leon Battista Alberti was the first in a series of major architectural changes that the Renaissance architect and theorist made for the Rucellai family. The building, commissioned by the wealthy merchant Giovanni Rucellai, was built between 1446 and 1451 by Bernardo Rossellini, designed by Leon Battista Alberti, who was linked to the Rucellai by friendship and cultural affinity.Alberti created a masterpiece of style and sobriety, and he says he designed this building almost as an illustration of its manual De Re Aedificatoria (On

architecture) in 1452, where he said that architecture must impose itself more for the prestige of the proportions that demonstrating the beauty and splendor. The palace still belongs to the Rucellai family. In the nineties it hosted the Museum of the History of Photography Fratelli Alinari. The style of the building constituted a starting point for all the Renaissance architecture of civil buildings, and was quoted almost verbatim from his pupil Bernard Rossellino for the Palazzo Piccolomini in Pienza. Inside the palace there is the Renaissance courtyard, although today on both sides of the arches were walled up. Large round arches supported by columns with elaborate Corinthian capitals, reminiscent of the columns above the portal of the Baptistery of San Giovanni. Some rooms were decorated with frescoes by Gian Domenico Ferretti, Lorenzo del Moro and Pietro Anderlini.
