Palm: Back to the Game
The fabulous fairy tale connected with Palm's salvation by the white knight which turned to be HP was the top news this spring. Market watchers, business analysts and common Netizens discussed it at numerous web events, forums and blogs. However, the news itself was not that peculiar as everybody was more interested in its consequences and follow-ups. Unfortunately, HP just mentioned several times that it was going to use Palm's dowry in a range of its own products and that was all, eager for information people had to fight their own curiosity. Of course, everybody was sure that HP would submit some tablet gadget running the OS but no further information was provided on the topic except for some misty promises delivered by the company's representatives. Now it seem that the company is back to the game and is determined to regain its position at the market.
Last Saturday at Palm's developers conference which took place in New York the company representatives delivered a new framework for their developers Enyo. The framework has to replace the current version available to webOS developers Mojo. In contrast to it, the new version is not only more powerful and significantly facilitates the development process. It also provides a range of new functionalities and what's most important allows for app development for a number of screen sizes and form factors.
The issue is really very important as using this OS ability developers can create apps without any concern what device they will be used at. If one analyzes the situation at the market in general that problem has already created a range of obstacles for Android developers.
When Froyo was delivered to the market everybody was sure that it will give an incentive not just to smartphone apps development but will instigate third-party manufacturers to deliver tablet gadgets running the OS. Unfortunately when these devices were already in production, Google's representatives claimed that the iteration is not suitable for tablets and advised to wait for Honeycomb which is to be released at the beginning of next year. The problem with Froyo is exactly connected with a screen size and form-factor of future gadgets. The iteration is good for creating apps for screens of regular smartphones but it is no suitable for bigger screens of upcoming tablets. It means that even if new Android tablets come to the market they will be desperately lacking apps, which is extremely important for tablet users. No doubt, lack of apps is one of the major reasons why Folio 100, released by Toshiba is currently experiencing certain difficulties at the market.
