Palm Pre: Palm Cell Phones Newest Addition

The Palm Pre, Palm Cell Phones new offering, has staggeringly good visual displays and functionality

. While combining the best of conventional key pad ergonomics with touch screen interfaces. The Pre is very small, like a bar of soap, and unfortunately almost as slippery. Its compact design is unobtrusive to a fault similar to that of old Nokia Cell Phones. If it slipped out of your back pocket while sitting on a puffy couch, you might have to call out a search and rescue team.

It's nice to see a vertical slide-out keyboard that enables you to text and call with one hand. In fact, I have never seen such a small key pad that still offers enough space between keys so that mistakes are kept to a minimum. I must confess that comparisons to the iPhone are inevitable in this department, as I have the hands of a plumber. My fat fingers fumble around the iPhone like a Sumo Wrestler at a tea party. But I had no trouble with operating this Palm Cell Phones keyboard. The Gesture Bar at the bottom of the screen streamlines the process of one handed usage even more. The Palm Pre also features the classic trackball to further cement its reputation for one handed use.

The Pre's web browser is also incredibly responsive and its touch screen allows for easy finger pinching adjustments for zooming in and out comparable to the iPhone. Palm also announced a Software Developers Kit that will encourage developers to write 3rd party apps using simply JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

Another innovation of Palm Cell Phones newest addition, the Pre, is the soft spoken "Deck of Cards" interface, used in lieu of a "window" based convention. Users can scroll and toggle through the different "card" displays without having to open and close windows. The system is extremely finger friendly and is so effective it makes you do a double take. When you're finished with a given card (which would feature a given application you're running), you simply "flick" it upwards and the card will remove itself from the screen. The accelerometer rotates the screen to optimize screen orientation if the phone is shifted horizontally.

This phone also takes beautiful pictures, not unlike many Nokia Cell Phones, and features some image processing software that goes a long way in addressing that grainy, "bleached" photo quality that many mobile phone cameras have. While this phone doesn't feature video recording just yet, it has a 3 megapixel camera and boasts a considerable 8GB for image and song storage, and even features a 3.5 inch stereo jack. It offers a few things that the iPhone doesn't, such as copy and paste features as well as the ability to text images.

I suppose comparisons to the iPhone are unavoidable. After all, that's where the bar has been set. Though the "iPhone killer" might be too dramatic and misleading, the Pre is clearly an upgrade over their previous models and affirms that Palm is back on the scene in top competitive form.
