Palm Springs West Fest and Rodeo by:Mitchell Sussman

Cowboys, girls, horses and country music fill the desert for an unforgettable weekend

that proves there is more to be experienced in the desert then just golf and tennis.

Each March the Palm Springs Wild West Fest and Mayor Frank Bogert Memorial PRCA Rodeo come back to downtown Palm Springs for a week of western themed events

Palm Springs and the desert communities was once a haven for cowboys with its annual rodeo and riding trails. This week - long event that harkens back to those good ol' days. It includes a professional rodeo with events such as steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping and barrel racing in the timed events competitions while bareback riding, saddle bronco riding and bull riding are held in the rough stock competition.

In addition to the rodeo activities, there is also a 6,000 square feet of high-end western themed retail pavilion with vendors that provide food, clothing and other western themed items.

There is also free live music throughout the three days in a variety of country, cowboy, native Indian, mariachi, and Latin music styles.

For the children, there are carnival rides of all sorts as well as a petting zoo, pony rides and a mechanical riding bull to challenge the older young adults while bringing smiles to the younger faces. There are also a host of other special performances and activities such as the after rodeo parties that takes place each night at Margarita's Restaurant.

On top of all that, there will be a lovely lady who will be named Palm Springs Frank Bogert Memorial Rodeo Queen along with a Queen's court which will be chosen from the many contestants that come from the surrounding areas.

The annual event is located on a 10-acres site next to the Palm Springs Convention Center and it is named for Palm Springs' iconic cowboy, renaissance man and mayor Frank Bogert who helped brand the city a "Cowboy Mecca" in the 1930's and '40's.

Along with general admission, there is a VIP tent that includes not only preferred seating, but a fantastic array of food, wine, and other beverages.

The event typically draws between 12, 000 and 15,000 spectators over the course of the week - long event.
