Panama: Real Estate Hot Spot
Boquete, at the southern tip of a huge national park
, is a town with around 15,000 inhabitants. Life is a bit slower-paced here, but since being discovered by several American magazines, including Forbes, many people have begun buying up properties here. Ecotourism is also gaining a hold, and business is thriving. The land is hilly, with the Baru Volcano being the highest point and also one of the premier tourist attractions in the area. From the side of the volcano you have spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, the mountain rainforest, and perhaps see a few of the over 900 bird species that call this country home.
Las Tablas, south-west of Panama City, is one of the most affordable places in the country--right now, that is. It is what most real estate investors consider a hidden gem, because property for sale in Panama is extremely reasonable here, yet you still have many services available. In addition, Las Tablas is the capital of Panamas Carnival, and Carnival season is filled with fiestas, visitors, food, and fun. Located on Panamas Azuero Peninsula, the average residents age is younger than in the retirement-centric towns of Boquete or Panama City, but the town is still very quiet. Flatter than Boquete and less crowded than Panama City, many people find Las Tablas to be their perfect getaway destination. Add to that the proximity of stunning beaches, and you have a small city of 25,000 (except during Carnival season!) that can satisfy your desire to experience the true Panama while still having services available.
Panama City is much more like living in the United States or Britain than in any other city in the country. The infrastructure is fantastic--in fact, it is the only city in the country where you are likely to hit a traffic jam--and you will find all the amenities available to you. From McDonalds restaurants to modern hospitals, internet service to dog groomers, whatever you need is available in this city of approximately 1.5 million people. Panama property has been at a premium for years. There was a short dip when people returned to their home country after the Panama Canal was turned over to Panama again, but many of them found they loved Panama, and returned.
You will find that real estate in Panama is holding steady, and around these three locations is increasing at a rate worthy of investment. Those looking for a retirement location or a place for a holiday home would do well to put Panama high on their list of contenders.
