Param Vir Chakra (PVC) Subedar Joginder Singh Sahnan

Subedar Joginder Singh Sahnan was born in Faridkot, Punjab on 26 September 1921 to Sher Singh Sahnan who belonged to agricultural Saini Sikh family. His family relocated from Munaka village in Hoshiarpur to Mahla Kalan village, which is near Moga. Joginder Singh went to primary school in Nathu Ala village and for his middle school he went to Daroli village.

he was enrolled in the 1 Sikh Regiment on 28 September 1936.

During the Indo-China War of 1962 Subedar Joginder Singh was in command of a platoon in Tawang sector of North East Frontier Agency(NEFA). On October 20 a heavy concentration of Chinese troop opposite Bum La across the McMohan Line was noticed by Subedar Joginder Singh's and his platoon while holding a defensive position on a ridge on Bum La axis in Tongpeng La area . This was a preparatory to the Chinese advance on Bum La axis on 23rd October .

23rd October at 0530 hours Chinese troops launched a massive attack on the Bum La axis to attain a breakthrough to Tawang. The Chinese attack on the Ridge was formulated in three waves each about two hundred strong. These attacks were supported by mortar and artillery firing besides other weapons. The Chinese troops had to fall back with heavy casualties due to the strong resistance posed by Subedar Joginder Singh and his platoon.

But Chinese troops quickly regrouped and attacked again under artillery cover from a artillery barrage.

However, Subedar Joginder Singh and his platoon stood strong like a rock before the Chinese forces. In this fierce action, his platoon lost half of its strength but they never lost their will to fight. Subedar Joginder Singh refused to evacuate despite a wound sustained by him in his thigh. His troops also refused to yield any ground to the Chinese troops. Now followed the last wave of the Chinese attack. They attacked more strongly and with greater force determined to capture the post. By this time the platoon had very few troops left. Joginder Singh took charge of a LMG and killed many enemy troops.

But soon it became difficult for him to stem the heavy tide of advancing Chinese troops single handedly. The Chinese side was so determined to capture the post that they kept moving forward in spite of heavy casualties. By this time the platoon was out of ammunition. When the things got desperate Subedar Joginder Singh and the platoon came out of the trenches with fixed bayonets, shouting, "Wahe Guruji ka Khalsa, Wahe Guruji ki Fateh." (the Sikh battle cry). They fell upon the Chinese troops and bayoneted many to death.

Finally better weapons and numerical superiority of the Chinese side overpowered Subedar Singh's platoon and he was captured after posing heavy resistance. He died from the injuries sustained during the operation and frostbite as a Prisoner of War in Chinese custody. One of the fellow men later recalled that when Chinese authorities told Singh to amputate his frostbitten foot he refused saying that it would affect his chances of promotion after releasing from the POW camp.

For his inspiring leadership, steadfast courage and exemplary devotion to duty beyond all odds, Subedar Joginder Singh was awarded the highest wartime gallantry medal, the Param Vir Chakra, posthumously.
