Parasites Types and Home Remedies for Parasitic Infection
A parasite is an organism that lives on or within another organism and gains nutrition and other benefits from the host organism. The parasite usually does not contribute anything to the host. Often, the presence of the parasite can cause medical problems for the host ranging from minor issues right up to death. Parasites are usually much smaller than their hosts.
Parasites may be so small that they are undetectable by the host unless a thorough investigation is done by the host. Many parasitic infestations result in symptoms that are used by the host to understand that an infestation has taken place. Some parasites may produce generic symptoms that often complicate the process of diagnosis and treatment.
Types of Parasites
Protozoa: Protozoa are single celled parasites that were first discovered by Anton van Leeuwenhoek.
Protozoa are found in the blood, nervous system and digestive tracts of most humans.
Helminths: Roundworms, tapeworms, flukes, leeches, and other wormlike creatures are classified as helminths.
While roundworms, tapeworms, flukes and hookworms in humans are endoparasites, that is, they live inside the host's body;
leeches are ectoparasites that attach themselves to the outer parts of the host.
Arthropods: Classified as crustaceans, insects, and arachnids, arthropods are organisms with exterior skeletons and segmented bodies.
While being parasites themselves, the diverse species of arthropods are also carriers of bacterial and viral diseases along with the protozoa and helminth parasites.
For example mosquitoes which are secret as arthropods spread a number of diseases like malaria, yellow fever, heartworm, elephantiasis, and filariasis.
Symptoms of Parasites
Constipation: Some worms, because of their shape and large size. can physically obstruct certain organs.
Heavy worm infections can block the ordinary bile duct and the intestinal tract, making elimination infrequent and difficult.
Diarrhoea: Certain parasites, first and foremost protozoa, produce a prostaglandin (hormonelike substances found in various human tissues) which creates a sodium and chloride loss that leads to recurrent watery stools.
The diarrhea process in parasite infection is, therefore, a function of the parasite, not the body's attempt to rid itself of an infectious organism.
Gas and Bloating: Some parasites live in the upper small intestine where the inflammation they produce causes both gas and bloat.
