Parent Training - How To Deal With Online Games

We all need parent training. The basic problem is to be able to set limits, keep to them and at the same time show our children that we still love them. So, good communication is key because if a child feels rejected and unloved and only gets noticed when he is to be reprimanded, then we need to learn what to do. So the right mix of authoritative and positive parenting is really what works best.

So how do we use our parent training skills to resolve the awful problem of watching online games? First we can of course install software which blocks certain programs which we may feel are toxic, violent or just downright unacceptable. The only problem is that kids normally know a lot more about computer programming than we do and they will find ways round that.

One way of using our parent training skills is to use some good old fashioned communication, face to face style. We just have a chat with them and tell them what we expect them to do when online. We do not want them to clear the PC of their search history so that we can see what they have been watching.

The second problem we have to face is that the computers should be in the public area, that is the living room or the kitchen if it is big enough. Even if each child has his own computer, it is better that they are all there so that we can keep an eye on what they are watching.

Most kids I know have their own computer in their bedroom and this not only encourages some furtive and secret viewing of prohibited games and sites, it also separates the child from family life and that is not really advisable.

As I said, once you and the children sit down and talk together about what is not acceptable and what worries you and then establish the rules, that is much easier than just telling them that the rules are there to be obeyed. The fact that the PCs are in the shared area also means that you can keep an eye to make sure that they are not getting addicted to a game, activity or site which is unhealthy to say the least.

Finally, parent training helps us also to set the limits and what the bottom line is. This may refer to role playing games and we have to impose time limits as these are so addictive that the child begins to change behavior and that type of cyber reality is dangerous. Again, once we talk to them about what these games involve and why they are dangerous, this is a big step forward.

If you feel the need for more parent training advice, why not have a look at the site below. It was written for parents by a parent who himself was a runaway and went on to become one of America's leading behavior therapists.
