Parenting Tips on How Not to Raise a Brat

Parents naturally want the best for their children and would go to great lengths to provide it. There is, however, a clear line between providing for their needs and being at the mercy of their every whim.

Spoiled kids are willful and self-centered individuals who are used to getting their way all the time. According to experts, parents who over-indulge their child are in danger of ending up with a brat in their hands.

Parents should be able to tell the difference between needs and wants. The most common mistake parents make is thinking that they have to give their children everything they want (material and otherwise), and by doing so, they are showing them how much they love them. Remember that parenting is more than just providing for the wants of our children. Parenting involves raising kind, morally upright, and socially responsible human beings.

Parents should follow these guidelines in order to keep their kids unspoiled and better prepared for life:

1. Set limits. Children will always test their limits, this is their nature. It's the parents' role to set the limits, establish clear rules and boundaries and be consistent with them.

2. Communicate. Explain to them why these boundaries are necessary. Make sure children understand clearly what is expected of them.

3. Be nurturing, not indulgent. Establish a warm, loving relationship with your child, but do not indulge his every whim.

4. Remember, you're the parent. You are the adult and must be the authority figure in the relationship. Forget authoritarian parenting, rather, be an authoritative parent. Authoritative parents believe that both parents and kids have rights, and so have an open relationship with each other. They listen and consider the points of view of their kids. They enforce rules, but they encourage their children's independence as well.

5. Give them responsibilities. Hold them responsible and make them accountable for their actions and decisions.6. Stand back. Do not do everything for your children. Encourage them to be independent and self-reliant. Allow them to do things on their own. Allow them to experience small failures or disappointments. This will help them to deal with bigger problems later on in life.
