Parrot Training: The Step Up And Step Down Commands
Parrot training is as you know vital in order for you to have a manageable and sociable bird
. Before we start, here are a few guidelines for you.
- Keep the training sessions short and as frequent as possible
- NEVER scream or punish your bird in any way
- Always try to end a training session on a positive note
- Once your bird manage a command, let other family members try it as well. The is a tremendous good exercise to make your bird sociable and manageable by other persons than yourself
The Step up command
1. Chose the command you prefer. Step up or Up works just fine, but many people chose something different as well f.i. Come here, Lets move or something in that direction. The most important is that this is the command you use constantly, never change it.
2. It might happen that your bird is not receptive, then you could try to have the training sessions in another room away from the birds cage. Familiar surroundings might some times make the parrot not so cooperative.
3. Pick a relaxed time for the parrot training, and make sure it is not during the birds normal eating time and so on. It will for sure make the bird less cooperative
4. Hold your finger (wrist or perch) in front of the bird, level with the abdomen directly above the feet. Just make sure that you are close enough so it will be an easy step for the bird.
5. Give the Step up (or whatever you have chosen) command.
6. When your parrot steps up, give it a lot of praise and in the beginning its favorite treat. Reduce the treat giving as the bird gets better and better.
7. Always try to end the session on a positive note. Give a lot of praise and a treat ;-)
8. As soon as the bird get the hang of it, you should move closer to the cage and finally inside the cage.
The Step down command
1. Chose your command, and as we mentioned above it really doesnt matter what the command is as long as you are consequent.
2. Hold your parrot a little bit below the surface you want it to step to, and then give the command. Birds have a natural tendency to want to climb higher, so this should be quite easy.
3. Sometimes the bird will try to climb up your arm, but then you just stop it by using your other arm.
4. Give your parrot a lot of praise and treats when successful, but try to reduce the frequency of the treats as you move along and the bird gets better and better.
During parrot training sessions you might face some small challenges here and there. If for example the bird try to climb up your shoulder, just stop it by using your free arm. If the bird tries to bite, push your hand/finger towards the bird and say No in a firm, deep voice. Although, if the parrot doesnt stop the biting you might try to use a perch to start with. Never use gloves, as this will be a hinder in making the bird comfortable with you and your hands.
Wish you all the success with your beloved bird
