Part 2 Of How To Create A Website: Design And Html
Welcome to part 2 of my series on how to create a website! Let's dive back in.
CONVERTING YOUR IDEAS TO WEB PAGES
To do this, you'll need to convert your text and ideas into a physical and visual layout. The language this is most typically done in is called HTML, or Hyper Text Markup Language. You can either choose to write this code yourself using the simple syntax it's built from, to use an editor to design the page as it will appear to the user and have the code generated in the background. Those editors are called WYSIWYG editors, which stands for "What You See Is What You Get". These can be software packages you download and install, or that you utilize online.
USING AN HTML EDITOR
You can use either a dedicated HTML editor that offers special highlighting and documentation, or you can use a simple text editor. Many resources and books are available that explain HTML in simple terms. It is one of the easiest languages to learn. Even a child can do it. Although writing your HTML code can be more difficult than using a WYSIWYG editor, it provides more flexibility over the exact details of the design. Writing the code yourself can also improve compatibility between the various web browsers that your visitors might be using.
USING A WYSIWYG EDITOR
This sort of editor works much like a word processor does. The HTML code is built in the background as you type and drag objects around. Often, these editors come with pre-included visual templates and style sheets that can make your work stand out better. If you'd prefer to build something unique yourself, that is also a possibility. Using your own images, color selections, font choices and text sizes, you can arrange all of your pages' content as you see it.
You will also need to "link" your pages together using image buttons or text links. These are elements that, when clicked, will bring the visitor to the desired page. A WYSIWYG editor will offer you the opportunity to create these "links", sometimes also called "anchors", to your documents.
USING AN ONLINE EDITOR
Some web hosts offer a WYSIWYG editor with the hosting package. If this is the case, you can copy and paste, or manually enter, the text you have written for your site and have it immediately appear in place once your domain is accessed in a web browser. If your host supports it, there may also be simple tools for adding images, music and video to your web pages from your hard drive or various online resources.
If you are not using an online editor, you will now have a number of files on your hard drive that contain your newly created web page. So, you will next need to upload it to your web host before anyone else can see it.
The next article in this series will tell you how to take the pages you have created, along with any other embedded graphics you may need such as images, music and video, and upload them into your web hosting account. It's easy, and with a fast Internet connection such as DSL or Cable, it will only take you a few minutes. We're almost done, so don't miss it!
