Chennai, more commonly known as Madras, is the fourth largest city in India. The Parthasarathy Temple is among the oldest standing buildings in Chennai, the towers and pillars of which are adorned with intricate carvings which is a standard feature of temple architecture that can be seen in Southern India. The other exquisite feature of this temple is the multi-coloured, pyramid-shaped temple top. It is an 8h century Hindu temple which is dedicated to none other than Lord Krishna and is one of the 108 holy abodes which is said to belong to Lord Vishnu situated in Triplicane, near the famous Chennai beach, Marina. This was first constructed by the Pallavas, King Narasimhavarman I and later reformed by the Vijayanaga Kings.

The translation of "Parthasarathy" from Sanskrit means "Arjuna's Charioteer", in which capacity Krishna is honoured in this shrine. In the great Indian epic "Mahabaratha", it is said that during the great battle Lord Krishna was the charioteer, good friend, philosopher and guide of Arjuna, a brave warrior. Though the temple is devoted to all the various incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the main deity remains to be Krishna, known to be an incarnation of Vishnu himself.

Yet another interesting features of Parthasarathy Temple is that it houses the deities of the four incarnations of Vishnu: VenkataKrishna, Rama, Varaha(boar) and Narasimha(lion). Visitors will also be able to find a small shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu's consort, Vedavalli Ammai.
